Charcoal-grilled sensations
Located among the shops along Ledra Street Nicosia, Karvounomageiremata has plenty of competition from other restaurants but entering the cosy and warm eatery with a romantic little outdoor back yard is a breath of fresh air. The blend of traditional and modern, featuring classy colourful paintings with gold frames, forest green walls and white wood tables and chairs, lend the space an atmospheric touch. This is actually a tavern that pays attention to design and concept, and one you could easily invite friends for dinner to if you are celebrating an occasion without worrying about their impressions of the place, or food.
If you visit on Tuesdays, when there is live music, both fun and a good impression are practically guaranteed.
In fact, in 2011 it was nominated Best Tavern by Time Out Eating Awards. What makes everyone so keen on Karvounomageiremata is the combination of good food and attention to detail. The menu runs from a notable Cretan version of Caesar’s salad, through starters such as the aubergine salad and fried courgettes, to main dishes such as lamb chops cooked in olive oil and oregano with honey, the chicken kebab, kontosouvli and other well-cooked meat varieties.
On our most recent visit we accompanied our meal with red wine from the barrel served in gold metal tins jugs, just in like the old days, and it had a very authentic taste.
Service is brisk but friendly, Karvounomageiremata is often fully booked, and busy on weekends, but this had no impact on service or food quality when we last visited.
Prices are fair too, which along with the well-presented, unfussy food and the laid-back surroundings make Karvounomageiremata a place that locals visit time and again.
