italian cuisine
It can be frustrating when you are in another city in Cyprus and looking for a decent place to eat but don’t know which are the good places in town. And even if you know a few by name recommended by friends of friends who’ve been there, you are still never sure which is the safest bet; to go for the recommended restaurants or walk around and sit at the most ‘appealing’ one you find on the way and hope for the best.
Truth is, the second option is often the riskier one, but when it does work, you may have just discovered a new regular.
Somehow we always seem to decide about where we are going to eat at the last minute, after we’ve already left the house, it’s late and we are still ‘googling’ restaurants’ last serving time walking around the city in search of a good eatery.
A Greek saying says that whoever does things in a hurry will ‘stumble’, or will do the wrong thing, but it didn’t apply last Saturday when we literally ‘stumbled’ upon Cavallini restaurant in Kato Paphos and decided to walk in and try the food, also being in the mood for Italian.
Being one of the most established eateries in town, its old-fashioned character and place in the Paphos tourist area have made it a regular haunt for locals and tourists alike. In fact, one of the reasons we walked in, was because it looked busier than its neighbouring restaurants and we took it as a good sign.
Walking through the glass door entrance, there’s an upstairs dining option and an outdoor patio but because it was a bit chilly we chose to sit inside, although I think in the summer, the outdoor area would have been an ideal spot for dining as it can get noisy inside when busy.
Although the interior décor is simple, that of any regular Italian restaurant found in most countries, the food compensates for that prepared by chef Pietro Ribone and executive chef Christos Mavrommatis.
Cavallini offers a range of tastes and flavours, despite being Italian don’t expect only pizza and pasta on the menu. We shared a tasty rocket salad for starters which was freshly cut and the portion was good for two people and for mains I had the salmon cream pasta with handmade fettuccini which came with a small pot of parmesan on the side and my friend had the pork fillets with mustard and potatoes. We accompanied our meal with a bottle of local rose wine.
Food portions were satisfactory and quite filling and service was swift and attentive despite being busy on the night we visited. If you find yourself in Kato Paphos in the summer this eatery has a handy location located on the coastline and good quality food.
