NICOSIA – Marinos Sizopoulos was voted in as the new Deputy Chairman of EDEK on Sunday after picking up the most votes in the party election.
Limassol-based Sizopoulos, a dermatologist by trade, picked up 1,810 votes ahead of second place Koullis Mavronikolas who secured 1,282 votes. The First Deputy Chairman position went to George Varnavas who picked 1,693 votes while the Second Deputy Chairman position went to Costas Efstathiou who picked up 1,284 votes. Nicos Nicolaides, who secured 1,239 votes, missed out.
EDEK, whose party chairman is Yiannakis Omirou, had backed Demetris Christofias of AKEL in the second round of the February 2008 presidential election. On the proposal of EDEK's Political Bureau, 109 members of its Central Committee voted in favour of supporting Christofias, five voted against, and two abstained. But two years later, EDEK pulled out of the government coalition due to its dispute concerning the decisions of President Christofias on issues “surrounding the Cyprus Problem”.
