NICOSIA – Lawyers on Tuesday began a 24 hour islandwide strike in protest of what they are calling “serious problems threatening the justice system”.
Speaking to the media, President of the Cyprus Bar Association Doros Ioannidis said that over 165,000 court issued warrants are currently outstanding as a result of a hiring freeze in the public sector brought on by the economic downturn.
Ioannis added that judges and courtroom staff are no longer replaced after they retire creating huge problems for those who work in the legal system in Cyprus.
Lawyers congregated outside courthouses in all towns to voice their concerns.
